ITE Journal / novEmbEr 2006 Foreword As former chair of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Council (PBC) of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), I received phone calls from people in all corners of the United States who were looking for information on their specific pedestrian and bicycle questions and needs. Although I did not tabulate all of the calls, several topics were common. Perhaps the most common call related to the Segway® Human Transporter (Segway LLC, Bedford, NH, USA). Segway use is growing, most relevantly as a mode of transportation. However, typical roadway cross-section design does not accommodate this mode in the current environment. Can the use of Segway vehicles be accommodated on nonmotorized (pedestrian and bicycle) facilities? Some states say yes, some say no. Nevertheless, the transportation community soon must recognize Segway Human Transporters as a growing mode. This feature is an attempt by the PBC to bring forward the issues related to Segway use. My ultimate hope is to lead ITE to a proactive position on the use of Segways, perhaps through the development of a recommended practice on accommodating Segway use in the roadway environment.
